How to Manually Repair Windows 7 Boot Loader Problems

How to Manually Repair Windows 7 Boot Loader Problems

If you’re having boot problems on your Windows PC, it’s often helpful to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) to restore the Windows 7 boot loader—and you can do it easily from the Windows installation disc.
This is generally most useful if you’ve broken something and there’s a boot loader error, or if you have made the mistake of installing an older version of Windows on the same PC that already has Windows 7 which wipes out the boot loader.
Note: If your PC starts booting into Windows but fails, you should probably try using Safe Mode instead.

Boot From the Windows Install Disc

The first thing you’ll need to do is boot off the install disc, and then click through until you see the “Repair your computer” link in the lower left-hand corner.
image
You’ll need to choose the correct installation of Windows and then click the Next button.
image
And then you’ll get to the System Recovery Options screen, where you can get to the Command Prompt.
image

Repairing the Master Boot Record

If you want to restore the master boot record, you can simply type in the following command:
bootrec /fixmbr
You can also write a new boot sector onto the system partition with this command (which is often more useful):
bootrec /fixboot
And of course, if you just use bootrec /? you’ll be able to see all the options.
image
This is the same way that we fixed the “BOOTMGR is missing” error when trying to boot up Windows 7 or Vista.

Replacing the Windows XP Bootloader with Windows 7

If you’ve managed to install XP on the same PC that you already had Windows 7 on, you’ll noticed that you can’t boot into Windows 7 anymore. You can use this command to fix that and restore the Windows 7 bootloader:
bootsect /nt60 all
Depending on the partition that you’ve installed, you might need to substitute the drive letter instead of “all”.
image
Note: if you want to restore Windows XP back to the menu, you can open up a command prompt in Windows 7 and run this command:
bcdedit /create {ntldr} -d “Windows XP”
image

Using the Automated Startup Repair

Of course, all this command-line stuff is probably not necessary in most cases. You can usually just use the Startup Repair option from the Recovery menu…
image
It’ll check for problems and probably fix them. If not, then you can always use the command prompt.

Have you ever needed to restore your boot loader to get Windows working again?

bootmgr is missing windows 7

Fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" Error While Trying to Boot Windows 7 or Vista

If your Windows 7 or Vista computer has encountered the dreaded “BOOTMGR is missing” error, you aren’t alone. If the problem isn’t hardware related you can fix it with relative ease as long as you have a Windows DVD handy.
If you don’t have one, you can create a Windows Vista repair disk using our guide.
image
Boot off the Windows Vista DVD and then click Next at the first prompt:

You should see a link in the lower left-hand side for “Repair your computer”

The installation process will attempt to find your Vista installation directory. If there’s more than one in the list, select the correct one and then use the Next button again.

Click the first link for “Startup Repair”

The installation process will repair the system, and then prompt for you to reboot.

Alternatively you could have chosen the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:
bootrec /fixboot

At this point you should be able to reboot your computer, remove the DVD and everything should be working. If not, then head over to our forums and ask your question there. We’ve got some top-notch geeks over there!

DBX File Repair utility

DBX File Repair utility

Microsoft Outlook Express is a client side email application, first shipped with Internet Explorer 4.0. The application now comes with Windows 2000 and XP along with Internet Explorer 4.0 to 6.0. Outlook Express has been developed for the home users in need of reliable as well as quality Internet, E-Mail, and News group services.

Though the naming conventions are alike, there are many differences in between Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. Unlike Outlook Express, the target users groups of MS Outlook are the business class users, who need more sophisticated email functionality with close integration of various tools for collaboration and information management. Apart from this, there are many differences in the mail storage architecture of both these applications.

MS Outlook stores all the emails, contacts, notes, calendar entries etc. inside PST files (.pst). Installed with default settings, all the mail folders and sub folders are stored in a single PST file with the name, 'Outlook.pst'. If the setting of MS Outlook has been modified, then the entire mail components are stored in a bunch of PST files at a defined location. However, the PST files are not organized with respect to the mail folders ('Inbox', 'Draft', 'Sent' etc.) and the names only match the root folders. Therefore, if any problem occurs with your 'Inbox' folder or it becomes inaccessible, you need to try recovering the .pst files related to the root folder in which mails of 'Inbox' folder are stored.

In case of Microsoft Outlook Express, it stores all your mails and other components in different DBX files. Unlike MS Outlook, Outlook Express creates individual .dbx files for each mailbox. For example, it creates Inbox.dbx file and stores all your mails in the 'Inbox' folder. Similarly, it creates Draft.dbx, Sent Items.dbx etc files and stores the corresponding data within them. Hence, if your 'Inbox' folder has been corrupted or inaccessible, you can select the 'Inbox.dbx' file and recover all your emails back.

Stellar Phoenix Outlook Express Recovery software provides option to select individual .dbx file and recovers all your inaccessible mails from the corresponding mail folders in few easy steps. Below steps will give a clear idea about the recovery process:

    Note: The needed DBX file will have name of the mail folder, you want to recover.

    All the contents of the 'Inbox' folder is stored inside a DBX file, 'Inbox.dbx'.

  • After selecting the required .dbx file (The path of the file will be shown in the text box for Select DBX File on the main interface), click 'Start Recovery'.

windows live mail xp import outlook express

Migrate from Outlook Express or Windows (Live) Mail to Outlook

Migrating from Outlook Express, Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail to Microsoft Office Outlook is a relatively easy process but there are a few things you should be aware of. It also makes a difference if Outlook is installed on the same machine or not. In addition to mail, this guide will also discuss how you can migrate your contacts and calendar.
    In this guide;
    - OE is used to refer to Outlook Express,
    - WM is used to refer to Windows Mail,
    - WLM is used to refer to Windows Live Mail,
    - Outlook is used to refer to Microsoft Office Outlook.
    Note:
    If you are using a Windows Live Hotmail account, then most of these steps are not needed since these accounts store their data on the Windows Live Hotmail servers. To configure Outlook directly with your Windows Live Hotmail account, use the Outlook Hotmail Connector.

    Outlook is located on the same computer

    In this scenario OE, WM or WLM contains all your messages and is located on the same machine as Outlook. It is assumed that Outlook has already been installed and configured with your mail account. Contact your mail administrator or ISP if you do not know the mail account settings. If you’ve already tried to configure Outlook before but were not successful, you’ll have to start with a clean mail profile.

    Migrate Mail

    Don’t use the Import function from within Outlook to migrate your mail. In many cases this will reset the “Received” time and date on a message. Instead, use the export function from with OE, WM or WLM.
    1. Open Outlook.
    2. Open up OE, WM or WLM and use File-> Export-> Messages… to export the messages to Outlook.
      • In older versions of WLM, you’ll have to press the ALT button to see the File menu.
      • In newer versions of WLM, you’ll have to press the Windows Live Mail 2011 - File menu icon icon.
    3. Confirm the dialog and select which folder you would like to export to Outlook.
    4. Now all you have to do is wait. This could take quite a while depending on how big your message store in OE, WM or WLM is.

    Outlook is located on another computer

    In this scenario OE, WM or WLM contains all your messages and is not located on the same machine as Outlook. This makes things a bit more tricky as somewhere a conversion must take place.
    There are 2 options available;
    1. Install Outlook on the old machine as well and use the above instructions to get everything into Outlook.
      After this, backup your Outlook data on the old machine and restore it to the new machine as described in the guide; Backup and Restore.
    2. Move the entire message store from OE, WM or WLM and reconfigure it with OE, WM or WLM on the new machine.
      After this, use the instructions above to get everything into Outlook.
    If you choose the first option, note that there is no need to activate Office/Outlook on the old machine. It will install in a fully functional trial mode then which allows you to go through this process. If your new computer came pre-installed with Outlook and/or you don’t have an Office installation CD, then you can also download a trial of Office Home & Business.
    If you choose the second option, then you’ll have to locate and backup your Store Folder of OE, WM or WLM. To do this choose;
    1. To determine the location of your Store Folder go to;
      • Outlook Express
        Tools-> Options…-> tab Maintenance-> button Store Folder…
      • Windows Mail for Vista and Windows Live Mail for Windows XP
        Tools-> Options…-> tab Advanced-> button Maintenance…-> button Store Folder…
      • Windows Live Mail for Windows Vista and Windows 7
        File menu-> Options-> Mail…-> tab Advanced-> button Maintenance…-> button Store Folder…
    2. Copy the path in the dialog you see now (select the text with your mouse and choose CTRL+C).
    3. Open Windows Explorer to browse your computer and paste the location in the address bar at the top (CTRL+V).
      Press Enter to open the folder.
    4. Select all the files and folders from that location and store them to a backup location such as a CD/DVD, external hard disk or USB Flash Drive.
    5. Continue to the “You only have the message store files” section.
    Windows Live Mail - Store Location
    The Store Location of OE, WM and WLM contains all the data
    that you need to transfer to your new computer.

    You only have the message store files from OE, WM or WLM

    In this scenario, you have the entire message store from OE, WM or WLM on your hard disk or a backup medium. In order to get that data into Outlook, you must first configure that data with OE, WM or WLM again before you can import it into Outlook.
    Note:
    • If your message store is from OE, then you can use OE, WM or WLM on your Outlook machine to restore it.
    • If your message store is from WM, then you can use WM or WLM on your Outlook machine to restore it.
    • If your message store is from WLM, then you can use only WLM on your Outlook machine to restore it.
    1. Copy the contents of your backup to a folder on your new computer.
      This can be a folder location on your Desktop for easy access. You can remove the folder once everything has been imported into Outlook.
    2. Right click the folder containing the message store and choose Properties. Here make sure the “Read Only” attribute is not selected.
    3. Open OE, WM or WLM on the new machine.
    4. Cancel any account creation dialogs so that you’ll be taken to your Inbox folder.
    5. Choose File-> Import-> Messages…
    6. Select from which application your message store is from.
    7. Click Next.
    8. When prompted, select that you want to import from a store directory and click OK.
      Otherwise, directly select the location of where you have restored your backup.
    9. Make a selection of which folders you would like to import or choose All folders and press Next.
    10. Press Finish when you’re notified that the export is done.
    11. Now that your original data from your old computer is configured in OE, WM or WLM on your new computer, you can use the first section of this guide to get your messages into Outlook on your new computer.

    Additional Notes

    After you have configured Outlook, you might want to remove the account configuration from within OE, WM or WLM via the Tools-> Accounts… menu or via File menu-> Options-> Accounts… in WLM for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
    If you are using Windows 7, then you’ll need to download and install Windows Live Mail first if you want to transfer OE, WM or WLM data to Outlook.
    If you are running into any issues with OE, WM or WLM, you can use the following forums;
